Banksy Our Superhero

The art world has really struggled during lockdown, cancelled art shows and closed exhibitions have really made it hard to operate. We need to focus on what’s important in these tough times and once again the Art world is doing it’s bit both financially and by using its power of social commentary.

I have seen so many fantastic examples in last 7 weeks where ART has made you aware, bought people together and raised various funds, it is a fantastic movement, not always politically correct but hey its good to be on the edge.

Up pops Banksy with such an amazing gesture that fulfills all of the criteria that a real Superhero of the Art world should demonstrate titled ‘Game Changer’

On the 6th May Banksy donated a new artwork to Southampton General Hospital having arranged with Management to hang it for all to see on Level C. He left a note:

"Thanks for all you're doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if it’s only black and white."

Its mostly monochrome with a single flash of colour depicting a boy who has thrown his old superhero toys Batman & Spiderman in the waste basket and is now happily playing with his brand new Superhero an NHS nurse. Complete with Cape & PPE she is capable of flying like superman.

It will stay hanging until autumn when it will be auctioned with all proceeds going to the NHS.

Why he picked Southampton is a mystery, its possible that he may have had a family member treated there perhaps. In any case whatever hospital he would have chosen it doesn’t matter, the fact that he has is the important thing and once again his ‘commentary’ is spot on.

No doubt every Doctor, Nurse, HCA, Carer, Volunteer will feel just that little bit prouder to do the job they do today, courtesy of a painting.
